A three-hour drive or 35 minute flight north of Auckland, the Bay of Islands encompasses 144 islands and includes the boutique towns of Opua, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri.
There are plenty of activities to do in the region if you want to go on the water – you can sail, go by boat to the Hole in the Rock, parasail, kayak or fish. Once you are out on the water you enter a maritime adventure playground with an abundance of wildlife including penguins, dolphins, marlin, whales, gannets and more.
Walking is a popular option.
There are a few cycling options, you can head up to the world class Waitangi Mountain Bike park offering 30 trails of varying difficulty with great flow and features, from introductory downhill riding, jump trails, cross country and beginner trails. Wanting even more adventure – take a helicopter ride over the Bay of Islands, or a mini-bus tour up to Cape Reinga.

A passenger ferry service runs between Paihia and Russell, while a vehicle ferry provides a link between Opua and Russell.
